UK’s first Zero Carbon Competition

Cow Lane Newark – winner of UK’s first zero carbon housing competition 1998

I with my ECD colleague Nigel Craddock won this RIBA open international competition sponsored by government’s DETR for the UK’s first ‘Zero Carbon Housing’ on a brownfield river-side site in Newark which regrettably was never realised as a project.  However, the design informed the debate about housing density and sustainability, and was particularly praised by the judges for its successful urban design strategy as well as its outstanding energy and environmental strategy incorporating a rigorous assessment of predicted CO2 offset with renewable energy. The scheme included 70 units of mixed tenure with a variety of private, semi-private and public green spaces and a riverside walk.
